Community Service

Community Service

At Gelber & O’Connell, LLC, we believe it is both our duty and an honor to give back to the communities we serve, and we are or have been proudly involved with the following organizations and activities:

TOWN OF AMHERST BOARDS

Both Herschel Gelber and Stephanie S. Gelber have been appointed by the Town of Amherst to positions on different Boards.

Herschel Gelber is a reappointed member of the Town Traffic Safety Board, which is fitting for him as a personal injury attorney since the Board advises the Town Board on matters affecting traffic safety on all existing and proposed roadways, subdivisions, commercial areas, and wherever cars, bicycles, recreational vehicles and pedestrians travel.

Stephanie Gelber is a member of the Town Planning Board, which reviews and approves site plans, subdivision applications and coordinated sign plans; reviews rezoning applications and makes recommendations to the Town Board; participates in the development of Comprehensive Plans and reviews any matters referred by the Town Board.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN BUSINESS OWNERS (BUFFALO NIAGARA CHAPTER)

Stephanie Gelber sits on the Board of Directors of the Buffalo Niagara Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners and was appointed by them to Co-Chair their Public Policy Committee. NAWBO is an nationwide organization of women business owners, business founders and entrepreneurs whose objectives are, among other things, to encourage, support and educate women who own and operate businesses and to provide a voice for such women in the business, financial, political, public policy and social sectors of the community. NAWBO assists women to build meaningful relationships, strategic alliances and affiliations with regional decision-makers in order to promote and grow their businesses.

MISS BUFFALO SCHOLARSHIP ORGANIZATION

Stephanie Gelber was appointed to the Board for the Miss Buffalo Scholarship Organization last year and is also currently serving as the Treasurer of the organization. Herschel Gelber was a judge of the Competition last year and continues on as legal counsel. Miss Buffalo raises money annually to provide educational scholarships to support the talented young women of Western New York with their educational pursuits, all with the goal of developing future leaders.

FOOD BANK OF WESTERN NEW YORK

The Food Bank of Western New York obtains nutritious food and support from public and private sources and efficiently distributes these resources to the hungry in Western New York through its member agencies. It also educates the community and, most importantly, our children about nutrition. As a law firm, we annually sponsor and participate in the “Walk Off Hunger” and other fundraising events to help make sure that sufficient money is available to fight hunger in the Greater Buffalo area.

NATIONAL END DISTRACTED DRIVING CAMPAIGN

As part of a nationwide effort to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving and help our children make safer driving decisions, our law firm began making presentations to high schools in the Western New York area in the late Spring of 2012. The presentation was developed by the National “End Distracted Driving”, “60 for Safety” and “No Distracted Driving” organizations, in collaboration with safety professionals whose expertise includes framing the appropriate messages to reach teens. As part of the Campaign we requested, provided documentation in support of and obtained a Proclamation from the Town of Amherst declaring April “End Distracted Driving Month”.

In 2013 we expanded our efforts to reach out to the adults in our communities, who need to serve as role models for our youth, through speaking engagements at other organizations who believe they would benefit from a discussion about the dangers of distracted driving. Please contact us at (716) 633-5050 if you are interested in having one of our attorneys speak to your group about distracted driving or any other legal topic relating to personal injury or insurance law.

SUMMER SAFETY CHECK

We were a co-sponsor with Channel 2, among several others, of “Summer Safety Check”, a program run by Women’s and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, at which a local bicycle company provided free bike helmets and fitted children with the helmets, the NYS Troopers checked child car seats to make sure they were installed properly and we provided a safety demonstration showing the blind zone areas behind cars, based on information we obtained from another organization we support, KidsandCars.org. We also continued our campaign to End Distracted Driving by discussing the dangers and consequences of distracted driving and giving away wristbands as gentle reminders to drive responsibly.

E-SCRAP FOR CAMP GOOD DAYS

Gelber & O’Connell, LLC volunteers annually to be one of the designated drop-off locations, in partnership with Sunkking Electronic Recycling, where the community (and our law firm, its employees and friends) can retire their old electronic equipment. For each pound of electronics that Sunkking recycles through this program, a monetary donation is made to Camp Good Days, which we also independently support, to fund future wellness programs and send children with cancer to summer camp.

FOOD 2 FAMILIES

In co-sponsorship with Town Square Media (WYRK/JOYFM/WBLK/JACKFM), we have participated in the year end campaigns to get food to those in need in our community during the holiday season. Our law firm donated a thousand reusable/recycled shopping bags to the Food Bank of Western New York and numerous affiliated organizations (i.e., St. Vincent DePaul Society, Food Pantry at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Niagara Community Action Program) so they could package the donated food for those in need.

LANGUAGE TO LITERACY PROGRAM

Our firm was proud to provide a grant to the Buffalo Hearing and Speech Center for use in their Language to Literacy Program, which enabled them to expand their programming. In addition, our donation of Sabres tickets motivated some of their most challenging students to complete homework assignments and meet targeted goals.

CARVINGS FOR A CAUSE/RE-TREE WNY

We commissioned a very special statue in 2008, which was subsequently added to the front lawn at Gelber & O’Connell. It is a wooden carving of a Herschell Carousel horse created by artist Rick Pratt of Corfu through Carvings for a Cause, which promoted the reuse of trees that were damaged in the extensive ice storm in October 2006. The proceeds from the commission were used to replant hundreds of trees in the Western New York area after the devastation suffered during that storm.

HURRICANE KATRINA

In October 2005, Herschel Gelber LLC hosted a fundraising event for friends, families, animal lovers and their pets, to benefit the animal victims of Hurricane Katrina. All proceeds from the event were split between the Humane Society and the ASPCA to assist their on-going rescue efforts on the front lines of disaster-stricken Louisiana and the surrounding areas.

Our law firm has also been a proud sponsor of:

  • WNY Volunteer Firemen’s Association
  • Town of Amherst Police Department
  • First Book of Western New York (Literacy program)
  • Kids Escaping Drugs (Provides a second chance of life, free of drug and alcohol addiction, to the children in our community)
  • American Association of State Troopers (“Don’t Drink and Drive” Campaign)
  • Aspire of Western New York (Supports children and adults with developmental disabilities by providing individualized assistance based on personal choices)
  • Susan G. Komen “Race for the Cure” (The world’s largest non-profit organization fighting to end breast cancer)
  • Niagara Hospice (Million Dollar Duck Derby) (Cares for patients with end-of-life illnesses and supporting their family and loved ones through the illness and dying process)
