Choosing the Right Attorney
The following article was written by Mr. Gelber and appeared in Western New York-area newspapers.
Accidents can happen to anyone, although we think they will never happen to us. Would you be able to take care of your family, your business or, for that matter, yourself, if you were in a serious accident? Would you know how to go about hiring the right attorney to represent your interests?
Being involved in a legal matter and hiring an attorney to help you is a very personal experience. There are a few steps you should take in making this critical decision:
- Do research prior to hiring any attorney.
- Contact your chosen attorney as soon as possible to ascertain your legal rights before critical evidence disappears.
- Meet with the actual attorney who will represent you. Don’t settle for a anyone other than an attorney. Only an attorney can give legal advise.
- Ask and be assured that the specific attorney you meet with will be personally involved with your case until it is resolved.
- Look for and make sure you have chemistry with the attorney. If you don’t feel it immediately, it is likely you won’t develop it as the case progresses.
- Verify that the attorney has the precise experience necessary to handle your type of case. Make sure he or she has the contacts and financial resources to locate and hire the relevant experts and consultants.
- Discuss the fee arrangement. Ask about the anticipated costs and disbursements and how they are to be paid and/or reimbursed.
All to often, attorneys don’t take the time to get to really know their clients so they can determine what is fair and reasonable for a particular individual’s injuries and his or her family. We have been told that we are different because we do just that.
